Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came?
Charlotte E. Keyes (1966)
Suppose they gave a war and only one side came? That’s the end for that side.
Five Minutes for Israel (2010)
VENTURA — Two Israeli citizens, one Palestinian and one Jew, will offer their perspectives on Israeli militarism, the peace process, and the toll exacted on all Israelis by the failure to resolve the conflict in a meeting April 11 of Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions.
Even a paranoid has some real enemies. (Henry Kissinger). It’s the implication that Israel and its supposed militarism to blame that gets me. Perhaps if we lived in Ventura, California and not in the Middle East and had a population that allowed a full time professional army instead of reserves I would be anti militarism, too.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Topping Room at E.P. Foster Library, 651 E. Main St. Counter demonstration, anybody?
Ismail Kharoub, 18, is an 11th-generation Palestinian peace activist from Jaffa, a mixed Arab-Jewish city adjacent to Tel Aviv. He grew up attending both Arab and Jewish schools.
Jaffa is part of Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality, not a separate city. They merged in 1950.
Allowing for 25 years a generation† his family arrived in about 1735 while Jaffa was under Ottoman rule but just possibly when the Egyptians under the Albanian Muhammad Ali Pasha conquered and briefly ruled. Palestinians generally refuse to acknowledge the degree of immigration over the centuries to this area so I supposed we should be thankful.
Ofra Yeshua-Lyth is an Israeli Jew. She is a former journalist for Maariv, one of Israel’s largest newspapers, and a member of the board of New Profile, an Israeli feminist organization dedicated to challenging Israeli militarism.
Ofra Yeshua-Lyth is a supporter of a Secular-Democratic Palestine replacing the Jewish state of Israel. This formulation was at one time the PLO position (when speaking in English) until they realised that most Palestinians are totally opposed to the idea. Hamas, for example, specifically rejects the idea in favour of a Sharia state where those Jews who survive the slaughter will be allowed to stay as 2nd class Dhimmi residents. That must grate on people like Yeshua-Lyth if they ever stopped to think about it.
Given her hostility to most things Jewish and Israeli I wonder if she would define herself as a Jew if it didn’t give her speaking jobs.
Israel, as a democracy, feels it must tolerate people who work towards her destruction.
The event is free and open to the public. Someone is paying for this. Given the connection with New Profile, the someone is Dutch tax payers and naive Jews convinced they are donating to social projects in Israel.

† Probably less than 25 years. For most of the period as Arabs tended to marry earlier than Europeans.
