BBC quietly alters boilerplate
The Change BBC boilerplate on Gaza casualties to reflect disputed figures campaign delivered more than 700 signatures and received a bland we-will-think-about-it reply.
Well, perhaps they did!
Five Minutes for Israel is unsure that the United Nations, which has until now simply recycled the HAMAS controlled Gaza Ministry of Health figures as fact, has actually made the change but at least the BBC has.
In other words, about one from every three casualties was a fighter, a fact HAMAS was made huge efforts to conceal. We have no doubt that further diligent comparison by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center of the names of those killed with known members of terrorist organisations will further reduce the Civilian Casualty Ratio.
To keep things in perspective. While we doubt, as is often claimed, that 90% of war casualties are civilian or even one soldier for every eight civilians the Gaza figures stand up well to other conflicts and are a testiment to IDF efforts to avoid collateral damage. The civilian figures would be even less had not HAMAS as deliberate policy put them into danger, for the propaganda advantage.
I can’t claim with any certainty that the petition caused this quiet change in BBC boilerplate but I believe it to be so. As we showed with our effort to change the BBC profile on Israel Aunty doesn’t always acknowledge when she has soiled her underpants but may quietly change them when someone points out the smell.
