PFLP man released: France 24 Watch

France 24Salah Hammouri, PFLP member and assassination co-conspirator released from Israeli prison

France 24 reports on the release from administrative detention of Salah Hammouri. This isn’t his first time on this merry-go-round.

Israel frees French-Palestinian lawyer held without charge for 13 months

  • Why did France 24 promote him to lawyer? He claims to be a sociology student at Bethlehem University. Don’t lawyers need, at least, a law degree?
  • He denies being a member of the PFLP terrorist group. They don’t deny him. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine immediately saluted him as ‘comrade’. They quoted him as saying on his release in 2011 “there is no option for the Palestinian people except resistance, because it is the only way for us to achieve our people’s rights, our freedom, and our self-determination.”The undated photograph above comes directly from the PFLP website.
  • He is a long-term renter at administrative detention.
    • First arrested and placed under administrative detention in 2001, aged 16
    • Served another stretch in 2004
  • Salah Hammouri was convicted on two counts and served his sentence until released in the 2011 prisoner exchange:
    • Membership of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is an illegal organisation in Israel, the United States, Canada and the European Union.
    • Involvement in a plot to assassinate Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of the religious and ultra-orthodox party Shas, and former Chief Rabbi of Israel.
  • Administrative detention in one form or other is practised by the following countries: Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Myanmar, China, Egypt, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Syria, United Kingdom and the United States. France has had administrative detention since the 1970s. The reasoning behind administrative detention often is based upon contentions that the suspect is likely to pose a threat in the future.
  • Described as field worker to Addameer.  According to Fatah, Addameer is an affiliate of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)
  • His lawyer Lea Tsemel is known as the go-to legal advocates for terrorists.
  • Some reports claim he was immediately rearrested but France 24 has not mentioned this.
